International Gymnastics Federation (FIG)
has quota of 312 athletes for Athens 2004 Olympic Games: Artistic Gymnastics: Men
98, Women 98, Rhythmic Gymnastics: Individuals 24, Groups 60, Trampolinee: Men 16,
Women 16
Two athletes from Slovakia made it to this quota in recent World Championships.
Veronika Adamska in artistic gymnastics women and
Katarina Prokesova in trampolines.
So we can look forward to meet them in Athens next year, right? Well... not exactly!
Slovak Olympic Committee (SOC)
set up criteria for sending gymnasts to Athens much higher than FIG. Recently SOC
approved 3 groups of "Top Team" athletes for Athens 2004. Every group has different
financial support, but neither Adamska nor Prokesova is in any of groups. Despite of
qualifying from World Championships they may just stay home and athletes from other
countries will be more than happy to take their places. But how will this decision
affect the motivation of Slovak gymnasts in the future? Surely not positively!

Mr. Michal Ovciarik from Detva wrote to us:
KSG Detva is one of the largest and best club in Slovakia. Our gymnasts Homolova
and Luptakova placed best in recent meet Hungary - Slovakia in Tata on 4th and 6th
place. Unfortunately Luptakova injured her right arm and she competed in International
Slovak Championships only in two events. Maria Homolova took third place in International
Championships of Slovakia in Trnava and as the best Slovak gymnast became 2003 Champion
of Slovakia. Both Homolova and Luptakova were nominated for 2003 Worlds in Anaheim.
We are very disappointed that Slovak Gymnastics Federation is not sending their coach
Mykola Havryshchuk to Anaheim and we are still waiting for explanation why.
Very good results have also our young gymnasts - Laukova and Babicova.
Our fitness Greta Dobrocka (coaches: Zlatonova, Hecko) took seventh place in 2003
Junior European Championships in Brno.

Where is 2000 Olympian Zuzana Sekerova today?
Gymnastics-Slovakia.com exclusive interview - May 29 2003
Q: Slovak gymnastics national coach Nadezda Miklosova said for
press agency SITA "...I would like to have Sekerova in Anaheim if Zuzana is in shape..."
What is the status Sekerova - Worlds 2003?
Zuzana Sekerova: I’m getting ready for up-coming YMCA Nationals here in Savannah, GA.
SGF asked me to send results to them after this competition so they can decide weather I’ll be
on the team fro Worlds 2003 or not. I would love to help our team fight for spot at the
Olympics 2004. My routines are coming together nicely and I think that my conditioning will
peak for Worlds 2003.
Q: Many our fans remember you as the only Slovak gymnast in 2000
Olympics in Sydney and the best Slovak gymnast in 2001 Worlds. What happened since than?
Zuzana Sekerova: A week after I competed at the 2001 World Championships in
Ghent I injured my ankle severely performing my double back pike on the floor at the
international competition in Ljubljana, Slovenia. That gave me a lot of time away from the gym.
Later, I wanted to compete in Power Tumbling but I ended up training gymnastics again when I
arrived in Savannah, GA, USA.
Q: So, few days ago you celebrated one year in USA. Where are you and
what are you doing?
Zuzana Sekerova: Well, I completed my high school degree here in the States and I got
married! Also, I’m learning to coach. Of course I’m training lots for the YMCA National
Championships on July 7th and hopefully for The World Championships in Anaheim, CA. Although I
am here in the US I’m still a Slovak citizen so I hope to represent the Slovak gymnastics team.
Until I am enrolled in the University I’m taking private tutorials in computer arts. I’ve been
working on projects like music engineering for my floor music, updating my web site
http://www.sekerova.com, making
illustrations in CoachWayne’s Tumbling tips articles and learning business management
applications.
Q: What else is exciting to you?
Zuzana Sekerova: Beyond that, I was recently demonstrating gymnastics in two new
instructional videos that should be released later this year. And I’ve been
having fun designing custom leotards and gymnastics wear.
I’m really looking forward to going home to Slovakia for a visit later this year.
I have found American people to be much friendlier than I expected. I love it here,
but I’ve been away from my family and friends for over a year now and I miss them!
Thank you very much and we hope to see you in Anaheim. Good luck!
